India’s state-run Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) recently has signed agreements with 2 Bihar distribution companies for a 2.34 million smart prepaid meter rollout. India’s smart metering program is aiming to replace 250 million conventional meters with smart meter over the next five years.

In Malaysia, installing Smart Meter in all home is part of the government nationwide initiatives, endorsed by Suruhanjaya Tenaga (Electricity Regulator) through Incentive-Based Regulation (IBR), and currently being rolled by TNB. It has installed more than 1 million units in 2020. TNB aims to expand the smart meter usage to cover 9.1 million premises by 2026.
