WORLD OZONE DAY 2022

Scientists have revealed that humankind have caused a large hole in the ozone layer. Whereas if layer continues to grow in extent, it will undoubtedly endanger the health and sustainability of life on Earth. A breach in the ozone layer can increase the prevalence of skin cancer and cataracts, as well as damage plants and environments.

Throughout 1987, officials from 24 countries met in Montreal and declared to the world that it was time to stop damaging the ozone layer. By doing so, these countries pledged to rid the planet of ozone- depleting pollutants through the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.

On December 19, 1994, the United Nations General Assembly declared September 16 to be the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, honoring the signing of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer in 1987. On September 16, 1995, the day was first observed. The Protocol came into effect in 1989. By 2008, it was the first and only UN environmental agreement to be ratified by every country in the world. With over 99 percent of ozone- depleting substances now phased out, the ozone layer is healing.

There are several efforts to overcome the damage to the ozone layer itself, such are:

1. Elimination of the use of ODS (Ozone Depleting Substances),

2. Use of environmentally friendly vehicles,

3. Avoid using chemical fertilizers and pesticides,

4. Maintain air conditioning/AC,

5. Buy local products.

International Ozone Day, we honor the Montreal Protocol's accomplishments: the Protocol On this

that, through worldwide cooperation, protects all living things today and in the future.
